Rachel Carson- Individual In History
  Interview With a Carson Biographer

My interview with Professor Mark Lytle (Bard College), author of The Gentle Subversive: Rachel Carson, Silent Spring, and the Rise of the Environmental Movement:

How has Carson influenced your daily life? One of the laws of ecology she stressed in [Silent Spring] is that “everything must go somewhere.” Just because you throw something away, doesn't make it disappear. So I think about recycling and particular care with toxic materials. Carson also urged us to see ourselves as part of and responsible for nature.

How should people continue to spread her legacy? Urge people to read her books and put her message into practice… Check out the Rachel Carson Council in Silver Springs, Maryland. They have been keeping her work alive.

What is the biggest misconception over Carson's legacy today? The effort (which I discuss in my book) of some right wing people to claim that Carson has prevented the use of DDT in Africa. They sometimes claim she called for a total ban when in fact she called for responsible use.

What about Carson inspired you to write so much about her? She had a powerful impact on my generation because she taught us to think ecologically. In addition she wrote beautifully about nature so enjoyed reading her books.
